.Avi files can't have viruses in them, or any form of active content. Maybe you need to look at updating your video codecs, or trying another media player. K-lite codec pack is always a good one.
Some .wmv files can open web pages and stuff like that when theyre playing, though. Pretty annoying.

Yeah because all active content 'players' do not have buffers that could be overrun if implemented incorrectly. Oh.. wait.

After trying everything including the VLC, I have realized that the MPC (Media Player Classic) is the best of all.
