I always get frustrated by people who seem to think rar files are a bad thing.I mean c'mon when you use winrar to unrar the file and it only takes about 1-2 minutes and then it is converted into an avi for you anyway.
Get a life you anti-rar people :P

Malgloss, if you are still confused about rar, go to this link http://forum.mininova.org/index.php?showtopic=235011166&hl=winrar

One of the good things about Winrar(ed) files is they actually do download faster and are better in a P2P swarm. I use Directory Opus so to uncrunch my film I just double click on the first r00 file and it automatically loads winrar and uncrunches it for me. It is really easy and can save a lot of disk space.

Truth is, rarred, unrarred. It's all the same +/-. Files may...dl a bit faster. But, there is a much greater chance of file corruption, and data loss. Sfv checkers aren't perfect, and you can have a file that passed the checker, and still not work, bc of one corrupted rar, then you would have to recheck dl... Also it is easier to add hidden spywar/viruses, as well as disguised executables.
Honestly, they're potentially more troublesome than just getting the actual .avi/movie file. For packaging several objects, then yeah rar it. But for one avi file, it's more of a hassle, and not everyone likes to have to take the extra space to unrar the files, especially since some rars are over a gig nowadays. :r

rar/zip avi files are used for usenet newsgroups. Alot of files are snatched from newsgroups.
