The 4 basics: 1 Increase your upload speed. 2 set peer/seed connections to 199 per torrent 500 globaly. 3 Don't downnload more than 4 at a time if you run cable, two downloads for DSL. 4. Buy things you find useful :)

LOL, never made any configurations and get the full speed. Like Bozy said: you can download as fast as the seeders upload.

9.Posted by allenpaulo on Sep 01 2008 at 13:03

I agree withu bozy

10.Posted by gyaaga on Sep 01 2008 at 13:08

Please seed :P
O wait....please change your torrent settings :P

12.Posted by Sn0w on Sep 01 2008 at 13:37

Make sure your total upload is bellow ISP limit (this includes acknowledgment packets of the download traffic).

Increasing the number of connection doesn't help. That just overloads modems and nat routers (if you have one). You are better with your program defaults.

Most (all) of the problems with torrents are caused by ISP filtering. (not only your ISP)

Enable all encryption options you have.
Prefer https:// or use encrypted proxy for connection with trackers. If you can't try dht:// but avoid peer-guardian blocked ip's.
Some ports are throttled, set your client to commonly used port or try random until you find good one.

Of course tweaking the settings in your BitTorrent program and modem can make torrents faster and more efficient, because the optimal settings depend on circumstances like bandwidth speed and other forms of loads on the network, and are rarely provided perfectly out of the box.

bozy, if you have a 10 Mbps download bandwidth speed, you should in theory get a maximum of 1,250 kB/s download speed. You're confusing yourself a bit with the different data units. Maybe you should tweak your settings.

Thanks for the tips, TorrentFreak!

16.Posted by AUDI-BOY on Sep 01 2008 at 18:10

not bein funny peeps but im constantly having to restrict my upload speed as i dont think its fare when you got 80 seeders n 18 peers n im uploading at 80k and downloading at 3k i mean what f*c is that all about! :(

20.Posted by BeastAtTheFeast on Sep 01 2008 at 18:33

Paul1983aa - calm down, you are wrong about one thing - setting your upload cap to unlimited or close to your max upload speed CAN decrease your download speed.

a friend in need is a friend indeed... a friend who seeds is better

22.Posted by humanoid182 on Sep 01 2008 at 19:27

You can never get higher speeds than your broadband connection allows you to no matter how many peers you're connected to.

First convert your broadband speed to kB/s.. eg if you have a 1mb connection, Convert it to kB/s.. So 1mb = 1024 kB/s

Then divide it by 8. That will be your highest download speed you'll ever get. eg 1024/8 = 128 kB/s

Sorry to be a pain but hey... :P

Anyways keep seeding and smiling always.. :D

23.Posted by HaroProBMXRider on Sep 01 2008 at 20:04

You are all idiots for arguing on a torrent thread. Humanoid is correct (Obviously), and upload speed DOES in fact determine (Partly) your download speed. While they are 2 different things, your modem can only do so much, and cannot give you optimal download speed if it is shelling out optimal speeds through uploading. However, have we become that much of an instant gratification society that it means you cannot stand to wait a little longer for a download because your too damn selfish to share?

24.Posted by HaroProBMXRider on Sep 01 2008 at 20:04

Remember someone (And I mean 1) uploaded the file in the first place, and allowed it to be seeded enough that a mass amount of people have it so it can be reseeded. 95% of the **** downloaded via torrent is pirated, so the least you lazy ****s can do is share the god damn torrent. Just place all the downloads you want in your torrent client, set the damn downloads to only download your top priorities first, and go to sleep, take a s*it, whatever the ****. Just remember the reason torrents are successful is because people share, leechers are f*gs who have no life.

25.Posted by HaroProBMXRider on Sep 01 2008 at 20:07

I forgot to mention, you CAN tweak your settings to get higher download speeds, but ONLY to as much as your provider allows. The reason it increases the speeds is due to the fact you haven't optimized your settings, found the correct port to forward through, etc. If you set your client to accept a dial up connection and are using DSL, T1, etc. do you think your going to get a good download speed? People need to start using their common ******* sense.

Pertaining to #27, how do I figure out what internet connection speed I got? I have cable by the way.

29.Posted by Jaryth000 on Sep 01 2008 at 20:53

Well, I know I for one will Disagree with bozy.
Im running a 10Mbps connection. On average on Speed Tests (Speedtest.net) I get around 20,000kbs, and direct download speeds of a max of around 1.2Mb/s (Megabytes, not bits).
When I had set up my fresh install of SP3 (with no changes, and a different internal IP, so none of the port forwarding was set up) it had no tweaks on uTorrent and I was already downloading. Not bad speeds, but still.
Two main things I changed: Port forwarded though my router, with a Static (internal) IP. And change the Max Half Open from 10 to 512 (I like Overkill). (Change the Max Half Open in XP and in uTorrent).

I saw some NICE speed improvements.

30.Posted by Jaryth000 on Sep 01 2008 at 20:57

Also, as far as the Max Half Open goes in this argument.

As MANY people have said so far (and its very true) You are only as fast as the people you are downloading off of. If they have **** upload, you will have **** download. However, you never connect to ALL of the seeds at once. So with a higher Max Half Open setting, you can connect to more Seeds at once. That means you have a better chance to connect to seeds that give you a higher upload.
All of this is of course is limited by how much your ISP allows you for Download speeds.

For me, I have a good amount of Bandwidth space, and with my 10mbs connection, I rarely ever can fill that with a couple seeds. so having access to more lets me download faster.
And with the port forwarding set up... well that only really effects my downloads off of BlackCats... that I know of.

31.Posted by lopo on Sep 01 2008 at 21:24

well i found a good port for my self and now i have no problem with the speed

usealy downloads with 200-900kb/s and my max dl speed is 1.14mb

32.Posted by Thelastwolf69 on Sep 01 2008 at 22:03

@29, I'm selfish because I don't want to waste my limited bandwidth? Ok.

33.Posted by Chalandra on Sep 01 2008 at 22:07

Humanoid1982 you make a decent point.
Except that your arguement is flawed from the start.

ISPs advertise their DSL connections with for example 20MB on tv/paper ads.
However, what they're actually offering is a 20/1Mbit connection. Bits.
So you're not actually getting 20megaByte.

So to stick with that 20mb example, you'll lose 25% easily due to the distance from your house to your ISP.
So that leaves about 15mb worth of speed.

Now you have to know that download managers count in Bytes, opposed to the bits of your connection. So the part of /8 is correct. That'd leave 1920KB/s as your maximum download speed, this will still depend on alot of things like overbooking, distance to your ISP, general internet traffic, time of the day, etc.

And the same for the standard upload(1mb, or in your example the download) would be; 1024kb /8 = 128kB/s as you said.

The best bit about torrents is often the comments,I regularly get a laugh reading them,I mean most of you are so technical...so here is my 2C worth to make you smile...
TCP/IP dictates an up packet for every down packet,so you can reduce your download speed if you have an asymmetrical connection, which is what most folks have, if you have too much upload.
Finally, why be in such a hurry to download when its mostly rubbish you are downloading... manyana

These comments are all well and good, but what about the people like me that are new to this? I don't mind saying that I wish with all this information being printed, I wish someone would describe step by step on how to find the right port and whatever else is needed to do all this.

wikked_knight go to utorrent.com i use it and havn't had any problems

37.Posted by nitespy on Sep 02 2008 at 01:27

Just to add insult to injure (sort of speaking)this tweak would indeed help but its not significant. If you download from private torrent sites that monitor your ratio you do get very high speed downloads ALL the time, especially if your ISP is allowing this traffic without filters. Also if you get a public address from your ISP, that helps too. In your software you should do a NAT test and port test. If they pass, then you are well on your way. So in essence the tweaking the software doesn't really help. :)

bozy, your arent as bright as you think you are, and you are very wrong, ill just go ahead and point out that i have a 1.3mb connection speed and i can get up to 700kbs to 1mb speed on a solidly seeded torrent
