i can help you.
Ubuntu is great for your laptop.
Only if you never worked with linux before, give it a chance and learn how to do things by using the internet.
Your HP dv6000 has a broadcom wifi card right?
If not, skip this.
The broadcom card is not recognized by ubuntu out of the box.
To enable it, u must do serveral things.. it's not easy..
http://sites.google.com/site/computertip/broadcom-1 was my solution..
I'll hope your dutch is good..
This message is written on a HP dv6000 with Ubuntu 8.10..
Hope this helpes you..

Ow, and no, Linux is free. So no cd key
Linux is opensource so it's free.
But linux is no windows..
So you have to learn to work with it.
But in my opinion it works much better.
- no fragmentation
- no virusses (none seen yet)
- free of cost
- great support
- enough alternative software

@The-Iron-Lung
I strongly recommend using an wubi installation. What is that? You simply install Ubuntu "inside" Windows.
1-Boot into Windows
2-Put the DVD in the drive (or even better, mount the ISO with daemon tools)
3-Run the installer (wubi.exe)
4-Reboot into Ubuntu!
It is very easy and there is little chance to break Windows, and if you get bored of it, simply unninstall it like any other program.

yeah i did that but for some reason my wireless card does not auto detect an internet connection.

thanks

Thanks SuperUbuntu for that information!
I am a newbie to Ubuntu. I downloaded this torrent and my Dlink Wireless adaptor DWL-G132 is not being detected. So no internet for me so far in Ubuntu. I have the driver but unless hardware is detected, driver would be of no use. Any tips!!!
Thanks!!!!

gauss1777
go to the ubuntu website there is a 64 bit version there for download
works a treat as well "but you will have to install all the extras that superubuntu has installed on this 32 bit version" not a hard job and works very well on my AMD systems all of which run a triple boot {winxp/win7/ubuntu 32bit on 1 system and 64 bit on the other} ...

@@music_guru
1-Burn the ISO properly in "ISO mode" - use ImgBurn or similar software
2-Check CD for defects: Boot the CD, choose language, and select "Check CD for defects"
3-If you get no errors, it probably is a problem with your hardware (and if you get some errors, it means the CD is not properly recorded - it might also mean hardware problems)
Note: you can't just burn the files in the iso, you must burn it using "ISO mode" or something similar
