It says x264 .mkv, but it's not the usual 1280x720 720p true HD quality, right? So the question is, what is the quality? Is it the usual 350mb quality, just super compressed to make it smaller?

yea the file is mkv, but the quaility is great, so it's ok at least for a home user.
@21; if that's an unknown file, this could only mean you're trying to play the .torrent file on vlc. download either vuze,utorrent or any other torrent downloader and use the .torrent file there. you'll see when it's downloaded, then play the video.

I downloaded this .mkv-file (Matroska) (153 MB) in 5 minutes and converted it to a 359 MB sized .mpeg-file (MPEG2) in 13 Min. Very good quality: video and audio. (eztv-file for this episode has bad audio, so I downloaded this one, too.)

For converting I used this free and easy to handle (multiple converter) tool:

I also converted an avi.file to a mpeg.file (MPEG2) and it was only 30 MB bigger (388 MB instead of 357 MB). Nero uses way more MBs and the video flow isn't always constant.

I burned this to disc with convertxtodvd which never fails me and the audio was completely screwed!!!!!
I'm not sure about this codec, perhaps I should reconvert it before I burn.

I tried converting the file using magic video converter and it conked out, I think there's a problem with the file.

audio is terrible used convertx2dvd as above never failed even changed settings and converted again but still same not good file. :'(

The file plays fine in VLC etc, but burning it to DVD seems to provide undesirable results. I'm not an expert with codecs etc, but I've never had to install codec packages just to cope with someone's new codec as it causes all sorts of incompatiblities and surely one shouldn't have to as the latest version of Convertxtodvd handles all major codecs. Also Magic video converter conked out when trying to convert it, as I've mentioned I'm not an expert so if someone could tell me what the reason is I'd be very grateful.

Well, because of our little spat a moderator decided to ban me from mininova. I can make another account and I made one but it's very annoying
because they only banned me and I was just defending myself because of a misunderstanding. Anyway, I decided to take a break because I'm gonna be busy for some time and I will not upload very often from now on. :)

What i would really like to know is how you people have got MKV files to run in vlc. Every time I have ever run an MKV in vlc it has skipped frames and stuck and lagged. What is the point of mkv anyway?
