If you are New to linux, Please do not use Gentoo, first Get some training with Ubuntu.

A simple truth about linux, for all you eager to switch: unless you like to waste your life away trying to solve software problems, you will be disappointed. No matter the distro. Linux, ****s.

@minisansana: For me in the end it all comes down on how little I have to struggle with a OS.
Windows, like it or not, is still the best, not only for the fewer problems it has on all fronts, but also for the immense software park, large part of which is opensource and freeware.
With Linux it takes just few hours for the new user to find himself trapped into some absurd problem that has to be solved by editing text files in a language he doesn't know.
What is worst? To read people like the Ubuntu founder to declare that he wants to focus on making Linux more eye candy, which is the exact opposite of anything I am interests in. Vista and XP eye-candyness already bothers me enough, but to say so when you have a OS with tons of hardware-related and software-related problems is just discouraging.

I am new to Linux world as well, few months, and I do not do any programing. If you are new, just down load PClinuxos, and one program called wine. That is all what you need and I hope you will have fun discovering new world away from windows. I assure you it is worth it.

linux is really only good for two things:
1. Programming and stuff
2. (If you have windows and linux
"I can dual-boot my computer =O )

>linux is really only good for two things
Linux is really good for everything except using Windows addict software like DirectX 9/10 games on Linux may be bad idea, but you can find Cedega tool in this page too (under Liunux->games: most popular) and have fun.
