did u extact right .rar? if there was '<-->' symbol thats not right. .rar u should extract has nothing at the end of its name or '<--' symbol.

this game works perfect and is amazing:
1. extract to a new folder with winrar
2. open up the folder, then open up the portal folder in there
3. put the file from the fix in this directory, replacing the old one
4. right click on hl2.exe and click create shortcut
5. right click on the new shortcut and select properties
6. add '-steam -game portal' without the 's after the "s end in the target box
7. hit ok and play!

ok guys the dll thing might be your directx make sure that its up to date guys btw the game is great even though its only about 4 hours long but the good news that the ending song is the best song evar that song by itself pwns anyother game lol

I tried to post here the tutorial to make it work but it doent show, so just go to the mininova forum-games-portal post and see what I wrote about it (2nd page)

no problems here, did what axsys said, and it ran perfectly, cleared it ti the same day in about 4 hours, so not very long but very cool. if you're thinking of downloading this file, DO IT it's wurth it!! thnx man, for giving this GREAT game

am going to help the people that still seem to have some trouble here.Please follow these steps closely so you can enjoy the game quicker
1.Download the game first.It doesn't matter how many times you try to extract it.You CAN'T EXTRACT what you don't have.
2.Create a new folder in which to extract you're game to
3.Now extract the game to the folder which you just created.
4.go the the folder in which you "extracted the game to" and find the that's called "steamEmu" go inside the file and find where it says
MountCacheManual= and switch the number that was there to 405 you will not need the fix because thats what fix fixes.

5.In the folder the icon that says hl2 create a shortcut out of that.Now right click on the shortcut find where it says target and put -steam -game portal at the very end of the line EXAMPLE this is how mine used to look before I changed it continues on next post

i changed it to 405 and i still get MountAppFilesystem() Failed

I'm not sure what's going on yet, but it won't extract. I tried with 7-Zip and it says it's not a supported archive, and with WinRAR, it says it's an unknown format or damaged. :/

OK now for the people getting the MountAppFilesystem() here is the problem.Make sure that there is a space between where it says exe" and -steam -game portal so make sure that wen you put it its at thevery end of wat was already written there ok and make sure that there is a pace between what was there and what you just put and make sure to follow the instrictions that i wrote before

Seems that the winrar is having problems, when unraring folder, that has a subfolder of the same name (in this case portal/portal ). That caused that the folders were indead in incorect order, which caused the problem. I haven't noticed that not until I've tried to use 7-zip to unrar it and double checked with the original HL2.
For those who have problems with the "mount blablabla" here:

For those having the corrupted file problem, make sure your torrent tracker is not accessing the files when you try to extract the .rar

I just got it to work. I did this by deleting all the stuff I extracted before. I then made sure that utorrent was not using any of the files. t extracted again. put the fix in, did the gameinfo thingy and the shortcut and it works now

just to put my bit in (hay it worked for me)
i had all the problems as above but i deleted what i had unziped (using winrar) and started again i uesed the fix link, from post 53 copyed and pasted in to portal folder (steamemu) then made shortcut from hl2 opened properties and put in wot everyone is saying to put in
-steam -game portal clicked ok and it worked hope this helps

I also am having a problem with Portal. The game loads up, and then crashes at the menu. I updated drivers and directx. I applied the patch. It does load, just wont work.
Here are my specs:

i used to get BSOD, but i put the latest omega drivers and it works.

I am having the same problem as Teh_canadian. I am using vista and when i create a shortcut to hl2.exe and go to edit the target box of the shortcut there are not " " around the shortcut path and it tells me its an invalid short cut if i add -steam -game portal to the target or if i add "to both ends and then try add -steam -game portal same thing. Please help can someone tell me waht im doing wrong or past the entire target box

because a lot of data files are shared with hl2
they were designed to be a bundle,not stand alone

Yeah, that's pretty much what I said, but I would suspect that a lot of those files could be deleted. Well probably not deleted but zeroed out files with the same name if it's never going to use them.
Btw, the rars equate to 2.3 gigs, when all is said and done, what does this actually take space wise after it's installed? Could someone tell me who has already installed.

Hey here is the crack for the ENGINE.DLL file that crashes the game with the " directX 8.0 " message ! It works for PORTAL & HL2 EP2 http://mixman.res.lt/stuff/hl2/half-life.2.episode.two-patch.exe

Hi i downloaded the game and extracted and applied the fix. the game runs goes to the main menu and when i het new game and i select the level i hit start game it goes back to the main menu. Do i need to download HL2 or something?

When I play the game, I start from the beginning when you're in that little room and the portal opens, but when I go in the portal, the game crashes and has an error.
I've done everything above that anyone's said to do and it just won't work.
I can START the game, I just can't go in that first portal. What's the problem?

Do we need steam to run portal and hl2 ?

and i cant put -steam -game portal in the back of the target to the shortcut i have created.
I have fixed the SteamEmu from 426 to 405.
And where is the run button for Portal ? I'm new in this stuff and try to understand it.. can someone explane ?

This is strange, it was working flawlessly before but now it gives me this "hl2.exe has stopped working" error if I run it. I happened to move the Portal files around off my desktop. I moved them back after getting this error, but no luck. I also tried to re-extract the files straight to my desktop again but still no luck with this error. Is there a solution to this? I never even got to test the advanced levels :/.

1. Extract game.
2. Make a new map: c:\portal
3 Move the extracted "Portal" map and files into c:\portal
Then it will look like this: c:\portal\
With another "Portal" map, and alot of .gcf files in it.
Download the fix and copy it to c:\portal\portal
Then open GameInfo.txt in c:\portal\portal\portal
and edit "SearchPaths" so it looks like this:
{
Game C:\portal\portal\portal
Game portal
Game hl2
}
then do the same with the GameInfo.txt in C:\portal\portal\hl2
And don't forget to make a shortcut to hl2.exe
C:\portal\portal\hl2.exe -steam -game -portal
then it works.

when I start a new game, in 1 minute the game crashes... I tryed to get a bonus map unlocker... and the game also crashes in those maps. I think that there are some missing .GCF files in this game. My advice for the new ones is not to download this torrent 'till the problem is finally fixed.

MountCacheManual = 428 now change 428 to 450 and game should run, thats only thing that hasnt been included so i hope to helps some of you out and gl! have fun porting

wwalter, right click on the .exe file, choose "create shortcut". Now right click on the new shortcut you created, properties, and under the shortcut tab, where it says "target", you can add your parameters:
Example, I extracted the game to c:\portal, so my shortcut is:
Target: C:\Portal\hl2.exe -steam -game portal

Ok, this might be a little late but for you people who have the MountAppFilesystem error, but the problem is that you didn't have Steam installed, this game pulls those dlls from steam in order to run. They're found in the 'bin' folder in your Steam folder, although you may also need to download the Half-Life 2 demo in order to have all the necessary dlls for it to work at all. If you don't feel like reinstalling after you get Steam, take the 'bin' dlls and place them in the Portal 'bin'. If you don't want to install Steam, contact me, and I can give you the dlls.

So after i did waht Orijimi said i get this error :

Now i copied the files i got from steam to the folder...
(i got an original steam)

Nope. I have been trying for hours and it won't work. I can't even open the Short cut, it just states....
Setup file 'gameinfo.txt' doesn't exist in subdirectory 'hl2'.
Check your -game parameter or VCONFIG setting.
NOTHING I do can change this, I downloaded the fix bu NO ONE is specific to where I can drag and drop it, just to simply do that. I changed the File to "405" nothing. SOMEONE said to

HOW? You got to target box and then what? HOW does that info even have a INKLING of clarity.

2. open up the folder, then open up the portal folder in there
3. put the file from the fix in this directory, replacing the old one
4. right click on hl2.exe and click create shortcut
5. right click on the new shortcut and select properties

7. hit ok and play!

I've finally got the game to work, but shortly after the first portal opens, the game freezes, and closes, and asks me to send the error report to Microsoft... (sigh)
Is this probably because I don't have enough ram?

you have to extract from the .rar archive and not the r00 or r01 etc...

For some reason it seems some people randomly don't get the fix in the download. You will get an error that says MountAppFilesystem()failed:. To fix this see post #32. Props to Kakashi34 for solving the mystery. Other than that it works fine for me.

eh i figured it out, its all in the readme that is included with the torrent, if you are running a raid array its easiest to leave it on c drive in the programs folder
works fine now, blast to play, but goes way too quickly

For those using 7-zip and getting errors trying to extract:
Right-click on unl-prtl.rar (NOT unl-prtl.r00 nor all of them) and extract that. The .rar is the first file, even though Windows sorts the r## files to the top. Once it starts, 7-zip will recognize and continue extracting through the rest of them.
*Not guaranteed to work, but it might help.

It worked here ...
1 - Create a new folder
2 - they all "unlr-prt" in this folder
4 - Run unlr-prt001
5 - Now place the folder called "portal" within this folder ...
6 - now run steamemu and change out of 428 to 405 been this way
MountCacheManual = 405
7 - Now create a shortcut to the hl2 and going on properties ...
And place-game portal
There it well
C: \ portal \ portal \ hl2.exe-game portal
With that your game will run perfectly.
If you are making a mistake to try
1 - Delete the folder "portal" that you can and try what I did.
2 - using the fix I got some errors ... So could fix doing this.

IT WORKED AWESOME!
Hope this could help someone.
What i do is download the "Portal FIX-Unleashed" from http://www.mininova.org/tor/935300
This fix has SteamEmu.ini file just replace it with existed one.
Then create a shortcut of HL2.exe open the properties of this shortcut and in the target box paste these parameters: -steam -game portal
It will look like: X:\whatever\portal\hl2.exe -steam -game portal
(DON'T FORGET TO ADD SPACE BETWEEN HL2.EXE<SPACE>-STEAM -GAME PORTAL)
Works fine on my pc:
VGA: NVIDIA GEFORCE 128MB FX5200
PROCESSOR: PENTIUM 4 3.20GHZ
RAM: 512MB
OS: WINDOWS XP SP2
DIRECTX 9.0C

Posible solution to: "After I entered the game crash" , My problem was that a have partitions on my disk, say D: and C:, i installed the game in c: while windows was running on d:, so i changed the game to the same particion windows was runnig (to d, problem solved.

When I downloaded this torrent, I got a file with a bunch of unrl-prt files. I extracted everything from the first file and followed the directions from there. But I was wondering what to do with the other files and if they might be apart of my problem.

Nevermind. I fixed it. I added

to my shortcut instead of just game portal.
Everything works fine now.

I have same problem that I cant start a new game. I hit *start new game* and nothing happens. Same if I double-click on a picture. Tried to add differently with *-game portal -window -dxlevel 81 +mat_forcehardwaresync 0*, though -game portal kicks me out to desktop(without it, works).

Well after reading all these, and doing some tweaking this worked for me , if only briefly. If i had better computer there wouldn't be a problem.
i downloaded this torrent, and downloaded the fix torrent, (which is only 485kb, don't download a bigger fix)
extracted this torrent's .rar file to a file labled "PORTAL" then extracted the fix to the "portal " file inside the all caped "PORTAL" file which replaced the file there in. Also inside that folder is hl2.exe
i created a shortcut of it and , clicked to open a properties window for the shortcut, in the "target" text box after what is written in it, i wrote this "-steam -game portal -window -dxlevel 81 +mat_forcehardwaresync 0"

bingo the game played, i found that it wold crash after the first portal opened though, so i changed the target text to alow fo my level of DX "-dxlevel 90" which makes the game force dx 9.
After that i played through the first couple tests before my computer decide it can't handle portal physics and crashed yet again. also, i had portal render level set to "2" which game me , bad looking but stable portals. long story short, this game was intended to push computing, not to be run on old clunkers. so if your running a computer with one of the intel family graphic chipsets like I am, forget about portal. but i know for a fact that episode 2 runs fine if your patient. so does world of warcraft,

I'll try to share the solutions which worked for me.
1st problem:unable to unrar.
update your winrar at www.rarlab.com or just download a better version
