An overlap between artist name and album title might linger as a slight lack of originality, but it’s easily overlooked in the case of Heroes of the Broken Hearts and their 2008 debut We Are Broken. Following in the footsteps of the rap-rock pioneers Linkin Park, singer/producer Ste Tha’ Fallen’s complex layers of sound, dark melodies, and emo-driven vocals compliment rapper LiL TiL’s brooding lyrical flow to add a formidable entry into this burgeoning hybrid genre. The idea of redefining or transcending genres has become cliché in a proliferated music scene, but the elements of reverberating vocals and a sullen keyboard take this challenging style of music in a surprising direction.
The album, aptly released on Valentine’s Day of 2008, starts with an Elliott Smith-esque intro and develops into a melancholic ride highlighted by the heartbreak anthem “My Heart Vs. Your Dagger” and the rat-ta-tat-tat of the socio-politically astute track “The Truth About War.” The sound bounces among qualities of a dysphonic Whitey Ford, something from early nineties R&B, and an angst-filled yet soulful Hawthorne Heights. The band is wisely complying with a new generation of music fans, by offering the entire album for free download on the popular BitTorrent directory, MiniNova. In the first week a rush of support and interest placed Heroes of the Broken Hearts in the homes of nearly 1,300 listeners. These numbers, impressive for the solo debut of an independent act, offer evidence that the band has the potential to elevate above the shadow cast by Linkin Park and Gym Class Heroes.
