Check the dates of birth and death of that very fine and unknown composer of the high baroque. He didn't even grow 31 years old.
A special charm of that recording is the way the instruments play together, each with it's own, distinct timbre and the added timbres of a single trombone and a dulcian. The acoustics of the Gottorf palace chapel seem to have played a role in bringing out the timbres of the instruments so nicely.
From the booklet: These pieces, then, represent the work of an approximately 25-year-old Weimar court musician. They display originality and his search for personal means of compositional expression. He is clearly discernible as a contemporary of Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, but at the same time his sonatas are very individual and sometimes even bizarre. Oswald seems to have wanted to surprise his listeners, or at the very least to present them with effective, unforgettable pieces.
