Description:

Chopin, Franciszek
Ballade No. 1 in G minor, Op. 23

Recording:
April 28, 1959
Manhattan Center, New York City
Arthur Rubinstein, Piano

The ballade (NOT a ballad) is a solo work for piano that was essentially invented by the great Polish composer Franciszek Chopin. The idea of a ballade is thought to be inspired by French poetry of the 15th and 16th centuries, though much of Chopin's inspiration is somewhat debated. This first of four ballades was composed by Chopin between 1835 and 1836. Though recognised now as a great solo work of the romantic period, it has some elements of the sonata form, which is likely because of his education in the tradition of Clementi, Haydn and Mozart from the classical period. In a number of Chopin's works, he alludes to a great reverence for these composers, particularly Clementi, who he often referenced.
