Description:
Chopin, Franciszek
Ballade No. 2 in F, Op. 38
Recording:
April 28, 1959
Manhattan Center, New York City
Arthur Rubinstein, Piano
The inspiration for the second of Chopin's four ballades is thought to be derived from a poem by Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz named Le Switez. Chopin composed the peice from 1836 to 1839 and dedicated it to Robert Schumann. Ballade No. 2 sounds somewhat at times like a barcolle, or an 18th century Venetian folk song sung by Gondola operators.
