Description:
The Theme or Le Delire de Negation
by False Haruspex
Despite their perplexing band name (which I'm almost certain they stole from the lyric of a Clutch song) False Haruspex have created a monster of an album. The Theme is difficult to describe, as it is stylistically rather far-reaching. It rocks hard, has moments of crushing doom, moments of overwhelming beauty, plenty of nerdy prog-rock interplay, and lots of noise; all of it tied up into a cohesive, album length composition. The band's prog-rock influences are certainly apparent in the piece yet they favour atmosphere and mood over gratuitous soloing. Rather than being an overblown wank-fest, with each section serving to show just how clever the writers and performers can be, The Theme has more of a film score quality to it. It rocks hard, and cleverness does abound, but it makes sense when all is said and done, even to the non-musician listener. The visual imagery conjured up by the music is vivid, and it takes you on a journey filled with unexpected side trips (some pleasant, some terrifying) before eventually taking you to exactly where you want to be. That is to say: This album totally rules.
I don't know who to compare these guys to, and neither do they, but you'll probably dig them if you're into good music in general. I wish I could make it easy for you by tagging this release with a huge list of recognizable band names, but I'm at a loss... and it would feel sort of like cheating. Feel free to offer any suggestions.

"[Jaw drops] Holy shit! Talk about being blown away....it's pretty epic, guys! I need to listen to it with headphones on my next listen...but holy shit! I can't even imagine what it took to put that together...a rock and roll soundtrack... The arrangement, the musicianship, stringing all the parts together and then wrapping it back up with a bow. Wow....just wow. So, bravo, guys! Really, really impressive! Rob rocks hard as usual...everybody rocked. Holy shit!!!! That's the first thing that comes to mind." - Jim Wishart
"Mang, butt I luvz this; purfukt travelin' (train, drivin') toonaj. Intricate, aggresuv, hed-bangin' an' booty-shakin', dynamic, textural, pretty, raw, atmosfeerik, in-yer-face, an' the rivvim section rawkz like a mofo az the gonztarist ripz. I gotsa sez I reelly luv the vox at the end, too; them iz like, post-coital." - Vlayman
"'Wow' was my initial thought after listing ... it's nice to see someone thinking outside the box. I can't say I've ever come across any "rock" project that was this adventurous. ...I was like, 'man, it'd be kinda fun to jam with you guys...' Me on the vox... plenty of melodies coming into my head along the way. Lot of interesting contrast and musical choices. Cool stuff! Good work!" - Jayson Smiley
"A great sonic trip. Traffic was horrible this morning and I managed to listen to the whole thing in my car in one sitting. It made it a very enjoyable journey. Thanks again for sharing. Well done to all involved." - Alan Smith
"Ok, here's my two cents. This is a must have album. The whole concept blows me away. I don't think anyone could guess how this album was made not knowing the story behind it. The other thing that strikes me about this album is how visual it is. ...when I listen it feels like I'm going on a journey or adventure, sort of a middle ages/sci-fi trek across a swampy forest." - Bill Cantrell
"Got it and I am blown away. It touches on so much of my favorite vibes and genres. The musicianship is top notch and the songs are all killer. The recording is off the hook and the package was beautiful. What an awesome piece of work. Hats off to the entire team." - Mark Gearon (Junior's Flat Six)
"WOW. I've heard bits and pieces but just listened to the track as a whole. I kind of flashed back to the first time I heard Gentle Giant. That's an amazing piece of work, guys. Really enjoyed it!" - Steve Thornbrugh
"...ekwivulunt o' 8 sokker denouncerz sezzin', in dif'runt Yurpeen an' Souf Ammellicunt axentz, GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!" - Vlayman
"Interesting fact: I'm totally at a Soulja Boy/Lil Mama concert right now with my headphones in listening to your jams instead.
Thought I should share :] <3" - Christine
