Jacksons are Coming
Thursday 27 November 2008
9:00pm - 10:00pm
Channel 4
Tito Jackson, one-time guitarist of the Jackson 5, seems on the evidence here to be a gentle soul. He wears bowler hats, enjoys fishing and likes the idea of moving to Devon with other members of the Jackson clan. Jane Preston's strange, revealing film follows what happens when the family rents a house in a Devon fishing village with a view to buying a place there and escaping the pressures of California.
What emerges - ironically, given the presence of the cameras - is a sad fable on the inescapability of fame. The Jacksons are pestered by paparazzi and crowds of fans: someone is leaking stories to the press and by the end we're in no doubt as to who - it's an ugly betrayal. Saddest of all is Jackson matriarch Katherine's comment: "Sometimes it feels you don't even belong to yourself,"
she muses, "you belong to the public."
