Description:

WHY DO AN EP FOR FREE???

Cause people don't know who I am!!!!! Hahahaha.... seriously tho. Not only that, but in these economic times, people are much more likely to check something free than something that costs. Shit, I know I do.

And I'm hoping that by giving the people some good music for free, I will create a fanbase and increase potential customers for my follow up EP, Imaginary Enemies, which will be pressed and numbered in a limited edition collector's item series.

Lemme keep it a buck wit yall tho... The Late Nites and Early Mournings EP was not planned as a freebie. I met my man J Slikk thru my G Khalil from RockTheDub.com, best blogsite on The Net. Definitely THE REALEST!!! Anywho, J Slikk sent me a beat that made me think he robbed Pete Rock's of his SP. Shit was incredible. Laced that and then he sent me some Dre sounding shit from his man! I'm ODin, it reminded me of Dr. Dre but smoother... I'm like, yooooo.... laced that and they got at me about an EP wit BPA, Backpackers Anonymous. Ofcourse I was dee.

4 songs in I'm like, "So J, we gon press this up right? My label or yours?" He said, "Lets give em the music for free." My heart damn near fell thru the floor, cause I had put out a record almost a year before, and just off the beats alone I knew the project would get a decent reception. I was thinkin dollar signs like a mug.

But J Slikk is a genius. And he has continuously given the public incredible free music from his BPA camp. And now I have been privileged enough to work with him and Cynergy to create an EP strong in conceptual diversity yet tight in its cohesion of hard drums and smoove, soulful melodies couples with brooding, expressive lyrics.

If anyone reading this knows my catalog, each of my projects were exclusively produced by one producer. My first album 2 Much Aint Enuff was entirely produced by Yours Truly. I used no samples and have absolutely no knowledge of music theory. All I had was a Fantom X6 Keyboard, a cd burner, a heart full of passion and hungry ear, excitable drums. And a lot of folks didn't get the beats. My first album was heavily criticized for its production. And here I am thinking I'm all courageous cause I produced my own shit. Frustrating way to start a career... and a label.

So, for my second album, I got with an eccentric genius well versed in sample-based production who had a flare for experimentation. BiggUp my man l8sho (late show)! The result was Overqualified, an album that got some great reviews ina multitude of prestigious publications such as Black Tail Magazine (can u tell I'm most proud of that?), Entertainment Weekly, HipHop Connection in the U.K., and popular websites like Okayplayer.com, HipHopDx.com and many more. The album was seen as "beautifully bizarre" by Okayplayer and Entertainment Weekly said I had potential for underground stardom. Awwwww SHEEEEIITTT!! Waddup Simon!

Yet I got maad 3's sunn!! HipHopDx praised my album throughout the review by a REAL HIPHOP Head, Legendary writer/illustrator A.L. Dre (waddup Sir! Thankyou for your incredible review!) yet I got 3 X's. Same in HipHopConnection. Can't lie, I was a lil dumbfounded.

So, I figure lemme flex a lil songwriting capability on this EP. "The Basics", "Forever", and even "Premeditated" are my attempts at really focusing ona concept, or deviating from the typical brag rap, and expressing something else. "Cruisin Thru The Southside" is another one I think the hood ca dig.

Another interesting piece to the "Late Nites" EP is that this is the first project I will be releasing that has more than one producer. There is definitely more than one type of sound to be found throughout Lates Nites. J Slikk and Cynergy, I'm MAAD Proud of Yall. Both of yall delivered! Much Respeck Fellas.

My following EP, Imaginary Enemies, is also a serious deviation from my first two projects. It is a continuation of my delving into the smooth soul samples and boom bap drums and thick, murky, early 90s basslines. But the chops are very different from anything on Late Nites. Totally produced by DJ Husky, who I like to refer to as the East Coast Madlib, I think we got something special. Please keep an eye out for the limited release sometime in Spring 09 on Classified Recordings.

Lemme know what yall think about Late Nites...

Much Respeck and Success To Tha Real Hard Workin Heads Who Put Loyalty Above Everything
