Description:
It has been said that twice in human history did great art capture the imagination of the masses: Shakespeare in Elizabethan London and Verdi in 19th Century Italy:- in Otello both of these elements are fused into what is widely regarded as the best dramatic opera ever composed.
Verdi was a lifelong Shakespearean scholar who would get more upset if you criticised his understanding of Shakespeare than if you criticised his music. He planned to end his opera career with 'Aida', but was lured out of retirement by the brilliant Otello libretto written by the poet/composer Boito, who not only condensed the play into a tightly focused opera but, in my opinion, improved on Shakespeare by adding Iago's great 'Credo' aria.
Domingo has been the top Otello interpreter for the past 20 years or so and is magnificent on this video. This is singing and acting of the very highest quality and he will long be remembered for his performances in this role. Even Lawrence Olivier conceded that Domingo's portrayal of the Moor was every bit as good as his own. Both te Kanawa and Leiferkus are in excellent voice and Solti gives a masterful reading of the score.
The opera is in Italian and subtitles are English, French, German, Spanish and Italian.
Princess Diana and Prince Charles are in the Royal Box in one of their last appearances together - it's easy to see why the newspapers referred to them as "The Glums". Princess Di and Sir Georg Solti died within 5 days of each other - we lost our favourite Royal and favourite conductor in the same week.
