Good Practices

For subtitles that do not require synchronization, load the file to ESS, repair them (see Repair Tool) and finally save with a proper filename and encoding type. Just follow the three steps:
1. make a double click on a subtitles file in order to load it to ESS
2. Ctrl + R in order to repair the.
3. Ctrl + S in order to save the subtitles with the same name as the video file.
That's it. You have more readable subtitles.

For subtitles that require synchronization, load the file to ESS, and try to synchronize them using Adjust tool: You must set the expected start time and the index for the first and the last spoken subtitle.
If the tool 'Adjust' fail to synchronize, try the Manual Synch Tool: You must set the expected start time and the index of a number of subtitles. It is recommended to set the first and the last spoken subtitle and then as many subtitles as you can (prefer subtitles with gaps).
Finally repair them (using the Repair Tool) and save with a proper filename and encoding type.

Note: Is not necessary for the subtitles file to have the same filename with the video file. When you load the subtitles to ESS, the ESS will search the folder for a video file with similar (not the same) file name in order to load it. After the process, when you save the repaired subtitles, the ESS will ask you to rename the subtitles to the same name as the video file!
