Review from 'Gramophone':
"With friends like these, you’re sure of a great evening’s music-making
Goodness knows how many CDs have been issued under the same title, but this is different – a filmed concert from 1982. The artists dress informally, Maisky turns the pages for Argerich in the two-piano works, and the packed hall responds enthusiastically to the music-making. At 56 minutes, the concert – at least, that part of it on this disc – is somewhat shorter than a similar event I attended in 2002 which began at 8.30 in the evening and wound up at 2.30 in the morning.
The playing throughout is exhilarating, strongly projected and highly concentrated. Nicholas Economou, so sadly taken from us in a car crash in 1993 aged only 40, makes a spirited partner for Argerich in the Mozart Duet Sonata. Maisky and Nelson Freire happily remain two of her closest friends on and off the stage. The Schumann swoons and sings, while the Rachmaninov Suite is scintillating. There are moments of untidy ensemble, but they count as nothing given the colour, imagination and sheer aplomb of the performances.
Visually, the film is standard at its most bog – wide shots, close-ups on hands and all terribly underlit."
