ÛÛ But, "The Black and White Album," is nothing new. ÛÛ

ÛÛ It's another energetic, fast-paced album, full of catchy ÛÛ
ÛÛ hooks and singer Howlin' Pelle Almqvist's charming yet ÛÛ
ÛÛ generic yelps. It's great material, but it sounds exactly ÛÛ
ÛÛ like their previous three albums, and fails to entertain ÛÛ
ÛÛ for the entire 14 tracks. ÛÛ
ÛÛ ÛÛ
ÛÛ Super-producer Pharrell took on two of the album's most ÛÛ
ÛÛ interesting tracks, which channel on funk and hip-hop. ÛÛ
ÛÛ "T.H.E. H.I.V.E.S." helps break up what would have been an ÛÛ
ÛÛ album that sounds like one long track. The song's ultra ÛÛ
ÛÛ catchy bass line will be sure to make it a welcome ÛÛ
ÛÛ addition to indie dance clubs' play lists everywhere. ÛÛ
ÛÛ ÛÛ
ÛÛ "The Black and White Album" also features a brave ÛÛ
ÛÛ instrumental track using just a '50s' organ and a drum ÛÛ
ÛÛ machine. This song, and another that plays vocals overtop ÛÛ
ÛÛ of piano and handclaps called, "Puppet on a String," saves ÛÛ
ÛÛ the album from boredom. They're both creative, but they ÛÛ
ÛÛ fail to cover up an otherwise standard album. ÛÛ
ÛÛ ÛÛ
ÛÛ After watching the garage rock revival die out, The Hives ÛÛ
ÛÛ are sticking to the sound that made them. Though unlike ÛÛ
ÛÛ their peers, they have managed to stay relevant, ÛÛ
ÛÛ especially amongst a group of core fans. ÛÛ
ÛÛ ÛÛ
ÛÛ The band is currently on a North American tour, opening ÛÛ
ÛÛ for Maroon 5. But touring with pop stars hasn't stopped ÛÛ
ÛÛ them from maintaining their underground cred, using their ÛÛ
ÛÛ off days to play smaller, more intimate venues ,including ÛÛ
ÛÛ a sold out show at Toronto's Lee's Palace. ÛÛ
ÛÛ ÛÛ
ÛÛ While it may be nothing fresh, the album is upbeat and ÛÛ
ÛÛ fun, and the live shows are sure to maintain their ÛÛ
ÛÛ legendary energy. You can't blame a band for putting out ÛÛ
ÛÛ another catchy rock record. Garage rock is dead. Long live ÛÛ
